Since its incorporation as a municipality in 1857, Millburn has operated under the Township form of government with a five-member Township Committee. The Township Committee is elected directly by the voters in partisan elections to serve three-year terms of office on a staggered basis, with one or two seats coming up for election each year. At an annual reorganization meeting, the Township Committee selects one of its members to serve as Mayor. A Business Administrator manages the day-to-day functions of the Township.
As of 2012, members of the Township Committee are Mayor Sandra H. Haimoff (term ends December 31, 2012), Deputy Mayor Robert J. Tillotson (2014), W. Theodore Bourke (2013), Sari Greenberg (2014) and Thomas C. McDermott (2013).
Haimoff became the new Mayor in 2008 following the expiration of former mayor Daniel Baer's term on December 31, 2007. Daniel Baer's service had marked the first time in the history of the town that a Democrat held the title of Mayor.

Millburn Police report that a commuter mugged and carjacked at the Short Hills train station by four men who had just stolen a Land Rover from a house on Slope Drive.
Two men in the Land Rover followed by two men in a 2002 Subaru pulled up to the Municipal Lot #3 at the Short Hills Train station, where, police said, they jumped from those cars and brandished firearms at a resident in a 2011 Mercedes Benz.
They demanded his wallet and his car and took off with both at high speeds and were witnessed by an off-duty police officer speeding through downtown Millburn a few minutes later.
The off-duty officer followed the cars and advised the police department of the whereabouts of the vehicles. The Subaru broke down and the suspects bailed out of that car and got into the other two and got away.
Gordon said he would talk to other vendors and bring the township committee a proposal in January.
In other business, the township committee spent three hours hearing testimony and deliberating on whether La Cucina di Clemenza should get a liquor license before denying the application.
They also said goodbye to Jim Suell, who attended his last committee meeting Tuesday night. For more on these stories, check back with Patch later today.
